Swan River Wrecks

Only one of the wrecks in the Swan River is protected by either the Maritime Archaeology Act 1973 (Western Australia), or the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 (Commonwealth).
The Swan Portland wreck is protected by State legislation. Lost in 1917, she lays 50m upstream of the Goodwood Parade boat ramp.

Cape Peron

An easy shore dive.

  • Depth 3-7m
  • Viz 5-8m
  • Access enter from beach

Description
Part of Shoalwater Marine Park. Limestone reef with many caves and ledges rising from a sandy bottom covered in seagrass.
Marine Life

Hazards
Always use a dive flag. Be aware that cobbler and cone shells live in the seagrass. Take care under ledges and in caves.

Ammo Jetty

Jetty shore dive.

  • Rating Easy.
  • Depth 8m.
  • Viz 4-8m, at weekends when it gets busy here, viz maybe lower.
  • Access A long march from the carpark to beach. Enter from beach or a giant stride from the jetty.

Woodman Point
Western Australia
Located inside Woodman Point Regional Park. Entry to Park is via Cockburn Road.
Also known, variously, as Woodman Point Jetty, ammunitions jetty, and explosives jetty.
Description
Great BBQ facilities, easy to make it a day out for all the family. Toilets, showers & parking onsite.
Marine Life
Its macro time, lots of nudibranchs. I usually see the odd octopus.
Hazards
Always use a dive flag. Be careful of fishing lines and hooks.

Robb Jetty

Remains of a jetty with pylons rising to just under water surface.

  • Rating Easy.
  • Depth 7m.
  • Viz 4-8m.
  • Access Long walk from carpark, easy to moderate water entry depending on swell.

Description

This is the beach where the famous engineer CY O'Connor took his life by riding his horse into the water and shooting himself.

Be aware cars have been broken into in the carpark.
The cattle run takes you from the car park to the beach

Boyinaboat Reef

A very pleasant dive site with a limestone reef rising from a sandy bottom. Ten dive trail plaques surround the reef.

  • Rating Easy (between entry and exit).
  • Depth 4-6m suitable for both SCUBA and snorkel.
  • Viz 4-8m.
  • Access Very difficult entry and exit.

Description

Boyinaboat Marine Sanctuary Zone is located inside Marmion Marine Park. The Sanctuary is a total no take zone.
Marine Life

Hazards
Always use a dive flag. Watch for boats, Hillarys is very busy. Although Boyinaboat lies inside a marine sanctuary, I have seen motor boats illegally moving between the reef and the seawall (including a dive club tinny!!). Check for swell and surge. Entering caves and diving under ledges can be dangerous. Watch for cobbler and coneshells.

Lake Leschenaultia

Freshwater dive.

  • Rating Easy.
  • Depth 6.5m max.
  • Viz 4-5m.
  • Access Easy, there is parking right by the lake.

Description
A very shallow fresh water dive, good for snorkel or to test that new bit of SCUBA gear. Very cold below thermoclyne. BBQ facilities and toilets in park. DEC entrance fees apply.
Marine Life
Home of the Oblong Tortoise (or turtle) Chelodina Oblonga, also known as the Long Neck Turtle. One of only two freshwater turtles in WA (the other being the Western Swamp Turtle).
I have seen turtles every time I have dived here, seeing 4 on my last dive.
Hazards
Tow a dive flag. There is a small tinny that scoots around the lake towing canoes back to shore. EXTREMELY cold in winter!

Mettams Pool

Good snorkel site.

  • Rating easy, inside reef is perfect 1st snorkel site
